Key 2027 Tax Changes: New Brackets, Standard Deduction and Credits
The IRS has released its inflation adjustments for tax year 2027. The standard deduction rises to $33,200 for married couples filing jointly, tax brackets move up, and several credits and exclusions increase.
Planning ahead: these are tax year 2027 figures. They apply to income you earn in 2027 and to the return you file in 2028. The return you file this coming spring, in 2027, covers 2026 and uses the 2026 amounts.
2027 standard deduction
| Filing status | 2027 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Single or married filing separately | $16,600 | $16,100 |
| Married filing jointly | $33,200 | $32,200 |
| Head of household | $24,925 | $24,150 |
2027 income tax brackets
All seven tax rates stay the same, from 10% to 37%. The income ranges for each rate are raised for inflation, which helps keep a cost-of-living raise from pushing you into a higher bracket (“bracket creep”).
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $12,800 or less | $25,600 or less |
| 12% | Over $12,800 | Over $25,600 |
| 22% | Over $52,025 | Over $104,050 |
| 24% | Over $109,125 | Over $218,250 |
| 32% | Over $208,325 | Over $416,650 |
| 35% | Over $264,550 | Over $529,100 |
| 37% | Over $661,375 | Over $793,650 |
