For most taxpayers, April 15, 2025, is the deadline to file your federal income tax return for the 2024 tax year. However, there are a few exceptions that may allow for extended deadlines depending on your circumstances.

Extensions for Special Circumstances

Certain groups may qualify for automatic extensions:

  • Natural Disaster Relief: If you live in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS may provide an extension to file and pay taxes. Check the IRS website to see if your area qualifies.
  • Combat Zone Service: Members of the military and other individuals serving in combat zones or contingency operations are eligible for additional time to file. Refer to IRS Publication 3 for details on how this works.
  • Terrorist Activity Impact: Taxpayers affected by terrorist activity in certain regions (such as Israel) on or after October 7, 2023, may qualify for an extended filing deadline until September 30, 2025.

Why Filing Early is Smart

Even if you qualify for an extension, filing your tax return as early as possible can help you:

  • Secure your refund faster.
  • Reduce stress by avoiding last-minute filing.
  • Address any potential issues, such as missing documents or unexpected tax liabilities.
